Diurnal Cycle of Wind Speed and Precipitation Over the Northern Australia Coastal Region: CYGNSS Observations
نویسندگان
چکیده
The diurnal cycle of precipitation and its associated land-sea breeze circulation over coastal northern Australia are investigated using surface wind speed enthalpy (latent sensible heat) fluxes from the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System. Composite results during austral summer 2018–2022 show that propagates westward Cape York Peninsula into Gulf Carpentaria. strongly coupled, with maximum slightly leading maximum. Additionally, analysis moist static energy budget shows help support westward-propagation precipitation. These results—based on novel satellite data reanalysis—are consistent previous studies have examined impact provide a benchmark for model representation this important atmosphere-ocean-land interaction.

The frequency, intensity, and diurnal cycle of precipitation in surface and satellite observations over low- and mid-latitudes
Global precipitation data sets with high spatial and temporal resolution are needed for many applications, but they were unavailable before the recent creation of several such satellite products. Here, we evaluate four different satellite data sets of hourly or 3-hourly precipitation (namely CMORPH, PERSIANN, TRMM 3B42 and a microwave-only product referred to as MI) by comparing the spatial pat...
متن کاملObservations over an annual cycle and simulations of wind-forced oscillations near the critical latitude for diurnal–inertial resonance
Sea breezes are characteristic features of coastal regions that can extend large distances from the coastline. Oscillations close to the inertial period are thought to account for around half the kinetic energy in the global surface ocean and play an important role in mixing. In the vicinity of 301N/S, through a resonance between the diurnal and inertial frequencies, diurnal winds could force e...
متن کاملThe Diurnal Cycle of Precipitation in Radar Observations, Model Forecasts and Maple Nowcasts
We have seen in a recent paper (Surcel et al., 2009) that the diurnal cycle of precipitation over the continental US exhibits some seasonal variability. This is a consequence of the fact that during the summer, precipitation is strongly forced by the diurnal cycle of solar heating and it usually initiates as small scales, while during spring, precipitation occurs at larger scales, being synopti...

Hourly or 3-hourly precipitation data from Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN) and Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) 3B42 satellite products and rain gauge records are used to characterize East Asian summer monsoon rainfall, including spatial patterns in June–August (JJA) mean precipitation amount, frequency, and intensi...

Hourly precipitation data from 1963 to 1993 of the contiguous United States were analyzed for secular trends in the diurnal cycle of precipitation. During the period the winter daytime and nighttime precipitation frequencies and the diurnal amplitude of precipitation frequency increased by ∼30−47% over the Southwest, while the winter precipitation frequencies and the diurnal amplitude of precip...
